About American Property Tax Counsel

The national authority in commercial property tax law.

Commercial property tax systems are complex, inconsistent, and often disconnected from real market conditions. Assessments vary by jurisdiction, deadlines are unforgiving, and valuation models rarely account for the realities of individual properties.

American Property Tax Counsel (APTC) exists to bring clarity and coordination to that process.

We help commercial and industrial property owners understand their assessments, challenge inaccuracies, and pursue fair tax outcomes - locally and across portfolios.

Who We Are

American Property Tax Counsel is a national alliance of law firms focused exclusively on commercial and industrial property tax law.

APTC attorneys have worked together as co-counsel since 1994, forming a collaborative structure that allows clients to access local strategic support through a unified national platform.

Today, APTC includes more than 125 attorneys across the United States and Canada, serving all major U.S. markets.

Rather than navigating different firms, rules, and strategies in each jurisdiction, clients work through one coordinated system—backed by attorneys who understand both local assessment practices and national trends.

Our Difference

Experience that shapes outcomes

APTC attorneys bring decades of experience to commercial property tax matters. Collectively, our members have:

  • Authored over 500 published articles on property tax law

  • Helped spearhead over 500 legislative and regulatory amendments affecting property taxation

  • Handled over 500 reported appellate cases

This depth of experience informs how we approach valuation, evidence, and advocacy -especially in complex or high-stakes matters.

Valuation and legal insight, combined

Our attorneys understand valuation principles and how assessment systems apply them in practice. Just as importantly, they understand the law governing those systems - many having helped shape it through legislative work, published analysis, and precedent-setting cases.

Leadership

APTC is guided by experienced property tax professionals who help set standards, coordinate national strategy, and support collaboration across jurisdictions.

Who We Serve

  • Commercial and industrial property owners

  • Developers and investors

  • National and regional operators

  • Multi-state real estate portfolios

APTC does not represent residential homeowners.

Member Firms

APTC member firms are selected based on experience, reputation, and focus in commercial property tax law. Each firm serves as the APTC representative in its jurisdiction while working within the national framework.

Every assessment is different. The first step is working with an attorney who understands the local system—and has access to national insight when needed.
